Act now to declare the Gulf of California a critical habitat

Known as the “Aquarium of the World”, the Gulf of California homes 39% of the world’s marine mammal species, 900 species of fish, and is sacred to numerous indigenous communities. Guardianes highlights the coastal and Indigenous communities threatened by the proposed Saguaro LNG Project—a large-scale fossil fuel expansion that would export liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Gulf.

We weave the documentary into each element of this impact campaign, allowing the voices of frontline communities to inspire action. Each Guardian added to the campaign becomes another voice for the Gulf in court.

What we do

Using community-led storytelling, strategic litigation, and civic participation to declare the Gulf of California a critical habitat

  • Community-led storytelling

    Created with the community, rather than about them, the direction of this story belongs to the community.

  • Rights of Nature

    Guardianes serves as a central part of Mexico’s first rights of nature lawsuit where whales are suing for legal rights. The effort is led by Nuestro Futuro, the first youth-founded climate litigation organization in México.

  • Civic participation

    All of the materials produced from the impact campaign are submitted to the courts as evidence for why the Gulf should be protected. Through 50 signature events, 30 community screenings, and a program supporting youth artists, we have submitted over 6,000 elements of citizen participation to the lawsuits.
